Chris Martin Rosene
1952-2025
Chris, devoted father, beloved Grampy, and much cherished friend, died tragically in a swimming accident, leaving behind family and friends who loved him deeply. From his formative years in the U.S., Mexico, Chile, and Guatemala to his decades of work in international development, Chris lived a life defined by curiosity, compassion, and a boundless sense of worldly adventure. After meeting his late wife Sheila Katz (1945-2015) while working on a documentary film in Guatemala, they travelled to Mozambique to teach English. There they started a family, later moving to Costa Rica and eventually settling in Ottawa. His long career in global health carried him to every corner of the globe, a testament to his passion for working in solidarity with other cultures and communities to make the world a better place. Even in retirement, he continued his engagement with global social justice initiatives, and maintained his connections with friends and colleagues from around the world. To family and friends, he was known for his kindness and his caring ways. Chris was always there to listen but never to judge, and he had genuine enthusiasm for whatever his family and friends cared most about. Not to mention, he was a darned good Scrabble opponent! Even while living with Parkinson's, Chris remained an adventurer to the very last day. He never missed his morning walk, and stayed active through Parkinson's boxing classes, swimming, and community groups like the Just Voices choir. Chris is survived by his sister Sandy (niece Maya and her daughters Halaya and Natalia); his sons Josh (Melanie) and Ryan (Erin); his four adoring granddaughters - Georgia, Hazel, Norah, and Shadi; his partner Stella Ness; and a wide circle of cherished friends and colleagues from around the world. His final weeks were joyful, filled with visits from loved ones and moments of connection. His time with us was far too short; he will be missed immensely and remembered always. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross Society.
